Reporting Crimes

When reporting a crime, the correct procedure depends on the offense’s urgency and nature.

Key types of crimes frequently reported as “Immediate Danger or In Progress” include:
  • Violent Crimes: Assault (aggravated or gun-related), robbery, murder, sexual assault, and domestic violence.
  • Property Crimes: Burglary (residential or nonresidential), motor vehicle theft, carjacking, and arson.
  • Other Crimes: Shoplifting, vandalism/criminal damage, and suspicious activity like loitering or prowling.

  • Call 911 immediately for emergencies, crimes in progress, or any situation where life or property is at risk.

Information needed when reporting a crime:  

Be prepared to provide as much detail as possible, including:
  • Who:  Suspect’s description and/or name.
  • What:  The nature of the crime.
  • Where:  Location of the incident.
  • When:  Time and date of incident.
  • How: How the crime was committed.
  • Weapons: Were any weapons involved?
