Securing Vehicles

Essential Vehicle Safety Tips
  • Lock and Close: Lock doors, close windows, and ensure the sunroof is closed to prevent quick, unauthorized entry.
  • Remove Keys: Never leave your keys or key fob inside the vehicle, and never leave the car running while unattended.
  • Hide Valuables: Keep items like purses, phones, and shopping bags out of sight, ideally in the trunk, to avoid tempting passersby.
  • Smart Parking: Choose well-lit, busy areas or secure garages. At night, park near bright streetlights.
  • Use Deterrents: Install anti-theft devices, such as alarms, steering wheel locks, or GPS trackers, to make your vehicle a more challenging target.
  • Secure Documents: Do not store the vehicle title or registration in the car, as this can help thieves if they are pulled over.
  • Protect Your Fob: For keyless entry vehicles, consider storing your key fob in a signal-blocking pouch (Faraday bag) to prevent thieves from amplifying the signal to unlock the car.
  • Garages: If you have a garage, use it and keep the door closed and locked.
Preventing Theft When Away
  • Remove Garage Opener: Remove your garage door opener from the car to prevent thieves from accessing your home.
  • Turn Wheels: When parking on an incline, turn your wheels toward the curb to make it harder for the car to be towed.
  • Don’t Leave It Running: Never leave your car running, as this is a prime target for carjackers.
  • Check Surroundings: Be aware of your surroundings, especially in parking garages, and report suspicious activity.
  • VIN Etching: Consider having your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) etched onto your windows to deter thieves.
