Securing Your Home

Home Safety and Security Tips:

  • Secure All Entry Points: Install deadbolts on exterior doors and reinforce sliding doors with rods or specialized locks. Ensure all windows have working locks and consider installing security film.
  • Upgrade Lighting: Use motion-activated lights around the perimeter, especially near entrances, dark corners, and the garage.
  • Smart Technology & Alarms: Install a security system with cameras (doorbell and exterior) and motion sensors, and display security company signs as a deterrent.
Landscaping & Exterior: Trim bushes and trees near windows and doors to eliminate hiding spots for intruders. Keep ladders and tools locked away.
  • Simulate Occupancy: When away, use timers on interior lights and TVs to make the house appear occupied. Have mail and newspapers held or picked up by a neighbor.
Key Management: Never hide spare keys under mats or in obvious places; instead, use a secure lockbox or give a key to a trusted neighbor.
  • Secure the Garage: Do not leave garage doors open, and disconnect the automatic opener if you are going on vacation.
  • Routine Habits: Establish a habit of checking all locks every night and whenever leaving, regardless of how long you are gone.
  • Social Media Privacy: Avoid posting about vacations or new, high-value purchases on social media until you have returned.

For additional safety, consider getting to know your neighbors to foster a community watch, and immediately change all locks when moving into a new home.
